Topics for Holy Synod seminars

Suggestions for seminar topics discussed by members of the Holy Synod headed by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III:

  1. Medical examination of the betrothed.
  2. Insurances and pensions for Priests, and Church workers.
  3. The Korban maker.
  4. Pastoral care.
  5. Spirituality of Bishops.
  6. The Bishop dealing with officials in the governorates and elsewhere.
  7. Key Church Committees or Councils.
  8. Meetings that the Bishop must lead himself.
  9. Salaries of Priests.
  10. Computers.
  11. The priest who sins and does not get caught.
  12. Church membership.
  13. Ecclesiastical Education.
  14. Engagements and marriages, and an adequate explanation of these by the Patriarchate.
  15. Physical need for the Bishop to build churches.
  16. Young people in need of work.
  17. Bishop: Who is he? What are his powers and limits? What are the laws pertaining to him? What is the nature of his service?
  18. Cooperation between the Dioceses.
  19. Useful experiences from the [Church] Fathers on the following topics: how to set up churches; how to deal with Priests with problems; experiences in service.
  20. To suggest a decision from the Holy Synod that monks are not to receive confessions, especially from women, if there are married priests in the area, especially within the Republic.
  21. Some priests have changed some of the words in the Euchologion.
  22. Families in which there is more than one Christian doctrine and the attitude towards communion for them - personal affairs.
  23. Relationships between adjacent Dioceses.
  24. The Crowning service, and its rituals, and the differences [in this service] from one Diocese to another.
  25. Is it possible for the Dioceses Affairs Committee to print the topics discussed? (That is, can the results of the seminars be printed?)
  26. Fathers of confession and how to get permission to leave him.
  27. Is it permissible to divide the city into neighbourhoods, each of which has a specific priest who serves them?
  28. Fasting for toddlers before communion (duration of abstinence).
  29. The one Spirit in the Church.
  30. Discuss some doctrinal issues such as: atonement and the Cross, and the return of the Incarnation.
  31. Some ritualistic matters, such as: when to say the Litany of the Departed, and Litany of the Sick.
  32. The Creed and "Our Father" and the different words used in them."
  33. Ways to care for the poor.
  34. Financial management in the Church.
  35. Endowment principals and Coptic endowment institutes.
  36. Spiritual and orderly performance of rituals.
  37. Kiahk praises.
  38. Simplifying the facts of the faith for the people, apologetics, explaining dogma in a spiritual manner, and protecting against sects.
  39. The importance of organised care of homes in terms of records, visits etc.
  40. The problem of conversion.
  41. Preparing generations of servants.
  42. Small productive projects.
  43. In marriage: the age difference between the two betrothed.
  44. The participation of the Bishops and Priests in the services of other Dioceses, and their visits to some people.
  45. Some phrases in rituals like saying to the Virgin Mary, “we are your servants”.
  46. Topics about spirits like demons.
  47. The topic of Jinn, and whether these are spirits of demons.
  48. Attention to social services in the areas where Catholics are widespread.
  49. Character of Melchizedek.
