Chapter 19. Rituals

Amendments to text of Covenant Thursday Liturgy of Waters

Original Arabic Text

The Holy Synod has agreed to the following recommendations and alterations:

First: In the Book of Covenant Thursday Laqan [Liturgy of the Waters]

There are some words in the book of Covenant Thursday Laqan [Liturgy of the Waters] that require correction (precision) for example:

  1. On page 97, the Lord Christ is referred to as “the first born of all creation”. The origin of the phrase “first born” (according to the Greek language) is Prototokos (Prototokos): the act of birthing Tikto (Tikto) + Protos (Protos) meaning “preceding birth”. The phrase therefore is, “born before all creation”.
  2. Also on page 97, the phrase, “it is not robbery when You determined to be equal to God Your Father” is corrected to, “Your equality to God Your Father is not considered robbery”.
  3. On page 105, the following is used: “So that we may cry out to You and Your Good Father and the Holy Spirit saying ‘Our Father who art in heaven’”. This is corrected as it is not befitting to address the Holy Trinity with the prayer of ‘Our Father’, then say at the conclusion, “through Christ Jesus our Lord” so the Son is in the formula and absent at the same time. What is more correct is what is usual in the introduction to the Lordly Prayer: “So that we may cry to your Good Father saying”.

These ought to be correct as follows:

Laqan of Covenant Thursday - Correction of pages 97, 98:

“Your equality to God Your Father is not considered robbery.” INSERT COPTIC

“Jesus Christ the Son born before all creation.” INSERT COPTIC

Laqan of Covenant Thursday - [Correction of] page 105:

Make us worthy of the filiation so that we may cry to your Good Father saying.
