Chapter 18. Consecrated Female Servants

Rituals regarding the consecration of women

Original Arabic Text

The report of the Pastoral Care and Service Committee was read regarding the consecration of women, its rituals and the areas of their services (attached as amended in Annex no. 17-B) and the following was decided:

  1. In the rituals of our Coptic Church, there are no female servant nuns, but rather consecrated deaconesses.
  2. The woman can be consecrated in the rank of Aghnastosa [Reader], Sub-Deaconess or Deaconess with the necessary warnings, not to serve the Altar, or do any priestly work, and the following warnings.
  3. Women teach in the church in meetings for women and children, and should not teach men in the church according to the commandment of Paul the Apostle.
  4. The Priest or Deacons present in the liturgies for nuns or children are to read the liturgical readings, as the Deaconesses may not read them.
  5. The consecration of women is done by the knowledge of a bishop, not a priest, and it is consecrated by the sign of the cross, and not laying of hands.
  6. A consecrated female servant is not to undertake her consecration after the Prayer of Reconciliation in the Liturgy like male Deacons because she will not serve in the Altar.
  7. The notes in the ritual consecrations are an integral part of this ritual.
  8. Deaconesses can help the priest in baptisms, but of course cannot conduct the baptisms herself.
  9. Women can clean the nave, but not the Sanctuary.
  10. They also perform other services such as helping elder women, expatriates, and other services mentioned in the report, which are not priestly jobs.

The Synod approved the aforementioned report after making minor amendments to it.
