Agreement has been reached in the relation to the following points:
- The period between engagement and marriage should be set out in the Engagement Record.
- Marriage is to be by consent and agreement [determined] in a personal meeting with everyone who is engaged, prior to the wedding date.
- The doctor who conducted the medical examination prior to the marriage must belong to the Episcopate, lest the medical certificate come from an unreliable source.
- It has been agreed that a form will be used to unify the Engagement Record in the dioceses, highlighting previous marriages for all betrothed, and the type of kinship between them, documents regarding the lack of encumbrances, or permits to remarry for those who have separated, and guarantees that there are no legal problems regarding the engagement and pregnancy regarding widows or someone separated from a previous marriage, and some other controls to guarantee the validity of the marriage.
- It is necessary for the Engagement Record to have 2 original copies, with the same serial number, and to be signed on the face of the Record. One of the copies is to be taken over to the Patriarchate or the specific Episcopate, and the Priest will look after the other copy in his notebook.
- In the case of marriage from within another diocese, the Engagement Record is handed over to this Diocese, and it is necessary to send the certificate of the absence of marital encumbrances to that Diocese.
- The Holy Synod decided that it is necessary to adhere to advertising the names of the betrothed on the church noticeboards once they are engaged.
- Given that engagement fees are estimated based on the value of the ring, some people resorted to evading mentioning the true value of the ring in the engagement report, which results in many problems in the case of giving up the engagement, as it causes embarrassment to the priest when editing the record, and arguments, and the priest may be forced to register a false number, which would give him a heavy conscience. The Committee therefore looked to find a solution to that topic, and ended up with an arithmetic rule, with a sliding scale in its percentage, so that fees do not escalate in a way that might cause some to hide the true value of the ring.
- The Synod decided that it is necessary to confirm the sincerity of the doctrine of those joining the Coptic Orthodox Church. This includes their conviction and good understanding of the doctrine of the Church. This is necessary before accepting them to join and participate in any sacramental rituals, including the sacred sacrament of marriage. It is important to examine the situation carefully before granting the sacrament of communion and marriage.
